In his later years, while working on the design of the Watts Chapel, Gaudí became dissatisfied that his assistant and model looked far slimmer than the Virgin Mary he envisioned. In a charmingly whimsical attempt to “correct” this, he filled the studio with delicious biscuits, hoping to round out her figure. It was an oddly tender gesture—one that revealed his warmth as much as his eccentricity.

Having endured the devastation of World War II and the pain of cancer, this artist rarely poured suffering into his work. Instead, he sought peace through creation, and generously offered that quiet joy to all who encountered his art.
